Mirror's Edge Preview

  by dimdot1212

In a world bombarded with First-person-shooters, MMOs, and racing titles, it was time for something fresh, and Mirror’s Edge for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 may have delivered it. This new title coming from Dice and EA is promising a completely new experience for all gamers and after playing the recently released demo, I’m starting to believe.

Mirror’s Edge puts you in the shoes of Faith a courier of sorts that delivers information packages to rebels in a heavily monitored future world. To deliver these packages you must use your parkour skills to jump across rooftops, slide under pipes, and delivering the occasional kick to the nuts. From playing the demo, I can tell the controls are exquisite. On consoles, all the main actions are taken care of using a combination of the shoulder buttons and it works and feels great.

The design of Mirror’s Edge is amazing, using primarily white with bright colors spread throughout the environment to show your way. This is called runner vision and it is very effective with interactable objects easily spotted in your bright surroundings. It’s good to see developers make games that aren’t shades of brown, gray, and black and use bold colors. Another fantastic element is sound, you hear every breath Faith takes and the wind rushing by as you run, jump, slide, and fall totally emerging you into the experience.

After watching trailers and gameplay, I was unsure on whether the first person view was a good choice for a parkour game, but after playing the demo I am completely convinced it was not only a good choice but the correct choice. You will really feel the sense of speed and momentum it is trying to convey. The one problem I had with it is when going diagonally, the view just glides over as if your floating instead of running.

If you’re unsure about the title make certain you download the demo, it completely changed my views for the better. Mirror’s Edge is scheduled for a November 11th release and I can hardly wait.

The only issue I've been having with Mirror's Edge is that of how short the game time is.
