LittleBigPlanet Review

  by Andi

Traditionally in the world of video games everyone plays there respective roles. Company's build concepts and levels for the consumer to jump into and enjoy on there spare time.

Before you pop in Little Big Planet, forget that concept.

Little Big Planet is essentially a forum for user content. Although the game comes packaged with a few acts, all with a good amount of levels and a lame moral at the end, it really acts as more of a way to gain the trophies and collect materials to use in your own levels. The real fun begins one you boot up the level editor. Riddled with materials, tools and mechanics that work like there real world counterparts you'll often find yourself slaving away at work thinking about what you want to build once you get to your PlayStation.

The system works like this. John makes a level using the level editor and decides its good enough for people to play. At this point John publishes the level to the Little Big Planet Community. Jane decides she wants to play today, and logs in and boots up John's level. After completing it, Jane rates the level so other people know the quality of Johns level.

The system works surprisingly well, and some of the user created content is excellent. The level editor is amazing, allowing you to create everything that you've gone through in the single player. Its an amazing feeling to build a working car, or robot, then pop it into a prize bubble for other players to collect.

The game plays well to. Aside from a few flaws (the system for moving between layers in the game is sometimes clunky and finicky) I had very few problems with it. The world of Little Big Planet is played a lot like a classic Mario, but simpler. Keeping in a 2D side scroller fashion, you have a button for jump and a button to grab. Except for the move buttons, thats all there is to it and boy is it addictive.

The rest of the controller is designated to creating and some other fun little bonus, such as controlling your sackboys arms, or making facial expressions. You'll want too do these things to, seeing your customized sackboy wiggling his arms and smiling is almost as rewarding as the game play, and being able to put on unlockable clothes and stickers onto your little guy, its all the better.

The downside to Little Big Planet is also the upside.. The user created content. Although some of it is excellent, most of it is not, and the game relies heavily on it. But with downloadable content now the norm in video games, I wouldn't be surprised to see some downloadable maps from the developers in the future, and frankly, the game is more about creating then anything, which is damn fun.

Finding levels to play is easy as well. It features a quick play mode when you don't really care what you play, or you can just browse the highest rated levels. If you like a level from someone, you can easily browse all his content, and favorite him, for future playing. Publishing is as easy as pressing a button, and much, if not all of the interface follows the same idea.

Little Big Planet is a much needed breathe of fresh air from conventional gaming. It feels good to be in the drivers seat for once, and take other people through your adventures, rather then always viewing other peoples. With tools like these, and game play like this, Little Big Planet is excellent, and shows nothing but potential.

As somebody who would rather play levels than create them, I wish I would have waited a year or two before buying this game. I'm sure the quality and variety of shared levels will improve drastically and I could have waited for the price to drop.

Another good review, keep it up. I just finished playing LBP myself.
