Resistance: Retribution Preview
With titles thinning out on the PSP, gamers want almost anything they can get. So when a project like Resistance: Retribution gets announced, gamers have no choice but to get excited. Bend Studio has taken charge of this title; they have developed many of the Syphon Filter games. Developers face a challenge crafting a FPS on the PSP due to the lack of second analog stick. Hopefully Bend as a remedy for that problem, claiming a new targeting system they have developed which they are calling proprietary targeting. With an all new story, levels, weapons, and enemies, Resistance: Retribution is coming together to be another reason to keep your PSP.
Some of the storyline has been announced, which seems to bridge the gap from the first Resistance and its sequel. Retribution tells the story of James Grayson, who is a former British Marine. For reasons unknown, James is forced to kill his own brother inside a conversion center. This forces James to go on a vendetta, destroying every conversion center he can find. James eventually finds out that the Chimera has developed a new method of reproducing which is converting humans to aliens. James gets hired on by the European resistance- the Maqis- and joins Cartwright and Parker in Operation Overstrike.

Judging by the screenshots, the game is looking marvelous showing off some great graphics, large stages, and incredible enemy detail. They’ve created a great game engine that pushes the boundaries of the PSP’s limits. The engine allows some great detailed characters and terrain that helps bring familiarity of the Resistance universe. Love it or hate it, the camera has been pulled back to a 3rd person perspective. The engine allows for some huge detailed maps and is capable of having many enemies of the screen at once. Hopefully they are capable of keeping as much as the feel of Resistance: Fall of Man to this portable title.
You will find some familiar weapons in the game including the Auger, Carbine, and the LAARK. There will be new weapons introduced also including a “One shot, one kill” sniper rifle and a BM001 Razor. Bend has announced there will be over 10 different enemy types, and yes, the Chimera are the central enemies. Some new enemy types are the Hag and Cloven, but familiar enemies like the Titan, Slipskull, and Leapers will return. Bend studios are keeping the portability aspect in mind with a liberal checkpoint system. This provides many checkpoints that make this title ideal for small bursts of gameplay for gamers on the go. Multiplayer has been announced, with up to eight players competing in five different game modes via ad-hoc and infrastructure.

Fans of the series definitely need to keep updated with this title. Bend studios seems to be doing incredible things with this entry, so hopefully they can pull through and make this a great entry to the series. No firm release date has been announced yet, but it’s scheduled to be released in the spring of 2009.
