Mega Man 9 Preview

  by Michael Perry

Where has this series gone?  With the countless spinoffs across multiple platforms, it seems like people have forgotten what made the original mega man series so exceptional.  Capcom plans to change all that with Mega Man 9.  With this entry, the series is returning to the glory days of the NES era where 8-bit graphics were glorious.  To help keep the nostalgic train rolling, Keiji Inafune was put in charge of the character design; which was the original character designer of Mega Man.

The story is set after the events of Mega Man 8 where Dr. Wily has taken control over some of Dr. Lights own robots.  Dr. Light sees in horror of his own creations rioting and causing disaster; so he decides to send in Mega Man to defeat Dr. Wily and clear his own name.

Even though the series is going back to 8-bit graphics, it still introduces many new features.  Going through the many levels in the game (there will be over a dozen), you will encounter over 50 new enemies and bosses to battle.  One of the bosses in the game is a female, which is a first in the series. It will also feature an online ranking system.  You will be able to track your score with other Mega Man players around the world. The bosses include:

          Magma Man

          Galaxy Man

          Jewel Man

          Concrete Man

          Hornet Man

          Plug Man

          Tornado Man

          Splash Woman

Nintendo has made a right choice with the WiiWare and Virtual Console.  With the high profile games being released in this day and age, their simply is no room for a simplistic release such as Mega Man 9.  It was rumored to only be for WiiWare, but it has been confirmed to release for the Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network.  Even though the game is multi-platform, the virtual console proves that classic gaming is far from dead.  The game doesn’t have a firm release date, but is scheduled to release sometime in September
